Talk to Our Specialists
Industries such as fertilizer, pulp and paper, water treatment, and oil and gas generate NORM-contaminated scales, sludge, and dusts as by-products. NORM originates from the radioactive disintegration of Uranium-238 and thorium-232, two long-lived radioactive materials found in different strata of the Earth.
NORM can cause worker health and environmental concerns. Like handling of other toxic wastes, NORM needs to have a plan of action for worker and environmental protection.

NORM Monitoring Results
In Western Canada, ISI has come across about 17% of the 800 oil and gas sites we tested having NORM contamination.
NORM can also appear on a site that had no previous contamination, and vice versa.
What can ISI do for you?
- Our Registered / Certified Hygienists can help in hazard identification, evaluation, and control of NORM.
- Testing for NORM Waste using Gama or Alpha spectrometry to determine radioactive concentrations (Bq/g).
- Check for “Unconditional Release Limits” suggested by the International Commission on Radiological Protection.
- Assist with NORM program as per the Canadian NORM Guidelines for the safe handling, storage, and disposal of NORM.
